Learning unit contents
This course aims to equip students with the fundamentals in defining, designing, planning and conducting a research project. Through its online modules, it also offers guidelines for the various stages of the research process to help the student in writing their thesis.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
- understand the importance of a scientific approach in creating knowledge in a world marked by the development of AI and political polarization
- structure and plan a research project such as your master thesis
- formulate a clear research question
- draft a convincing literature review
- make informed theoretical and methodological choices
- develop your critical thinking

There are several components to the assessment.
- Submission of a document: 2 pages of literature review (not necessarily related to the final thesis topic), based on at least 10 peer-reviewed references
- Open book exam on research design

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
From this year on, the test is scheduled during the exam period.
The course includes 2 parts. The first one is generalist and compulsory for all students. The second one is intended to address the specifics of the Master in Global Transition and Sustainability Management, including conducting research in complex and uncertain systems, transdisciplinarity, and research communication.
