Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
- General introduction (examples of geotechnical applications)
- Porous and granular materials
- Mechanical properties through laboratory tests (shearing, oedometer)
- In-situ tests
- Stress state in soil (effective stress, Rankine limite state)
- Shallow foundations (bearing capacity and settlement)
- Slope stability
- Retaining structures
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Understanding of the main principles and fundamental laws of soil mechanics.
Capacity for the choice and the interpretation of the physical and mechanical testing.
Design of foundations, retaining structures, slopes.
After completing the course the student is expected to:
- Choose a geotechnical testing campaign
- Interpret the main in-situ and laboratory tests
- Calculate stress distribution under applied loads
- Design a foundations for bearing capacity and settlement
- Design soil retaining structures
- Verify stability and safety of natural and manmade slopes
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
-- General hydrology (HYDR0001-1)
-- Strength of materials and elasticity (INGE0001-2)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Theory will be teatched face to face. Exercices will be done to apply therory. Additional exercices will be available on eCampus.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Additional information:
Lectures and practical work
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Géotechnique, 3 volumes of lecture notes including exercices, edited by Centrale des Cours de l'AEES, FSA, Sart Tilman.
The pdf files are available on eCampus portal.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam
Further information:
Continuous assessment is planned during certain sessions of the theoretical courses. This assessment will consist of solving short exercises (open-book) similar to the supplementary exercises available on e-campus. Students can therefore prepare for these short assessments by completing the additional exercises.
Written exam of theory and practice.
The theory exam, which is closed-book (no access to personal notes or lecture notes), consists of a written explanation of theoretical concepts from the course. Students are allotted one A4 page (one side) per question to develop their answer. Answers must be illustrated with clear diagrams and graphs, accompanied by concise text based on the diagrams.
The practice exam consists of solving exercises similar to those covered in the practical sessions. It is semi-open-book, meaning that students may consult their printed syllabus (lecture notes), but no other documents are permitted (no personal notes on separate sheets, for example). Handwritten notes from the syllabus are allowed, but complete rewrites of solved exercises on the left-hand page of the syllabus are NOT permitted.
The final grade is calculated as follows:
- Continuous assessment: 10%
- Theory exam: 45%
- Practical exam: 45%
The second session is composed of the theory and practical exams. The grade for continuous assessment is transfered from the first session to the second session. No partial exemptions are granted for the second session.
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Each lesson will be either a theoretical lesson (3 hours) and practises (3 hours).
