The lecture includes all aspects related to geological risk : hazards, vulnerability, disaster response, risk mitigation...

applied to earthquakes, mass movements, volcanic ... with focus on hazard coupling mechanisms.

Both scientific and socio-economic aspects are considered.

 

New components of environmental hazard monitoring by using remote sensing are added for this year.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The goal is to understand the coupling between hazards as well as the link between hazard and risk.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good knowledge of English and maths. (lecture given in English)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Development and computation of (earthquake) risk scenarios,

and use of remote sensing techniques and spatial analysis for environmental hazard analysis.

6 lectures of 3h, 

2 sessions of 3h of exercices (scenarios) and seminars

For the lecture for engineers:
1 field survey day related to Liege/aachen microzonation in April 2027; drone flight and 3D model construction.

For the lecture with 5 ECTS points (for geologists):

Visit of large mass movements with high impact in the Swiss Alps in May 2027 (if min. 5 students registered), eg. visit of glacier and rock collapse over Blatten in May 2025.

Field visits complemented by site visits in VR.
