Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To provide students with the basic knowledge needed to understand the purposes of spatial planning instruments and practices.

This knowledge is intended to:

  • highlight the general principles underlying spatial planning systems;
  • provide some critical distance from current planning practices in Wallonia by placing them in both geographical and historical perspective;
  • provide students in the Master's programme in Urban and Territorial Development with a common foundation for more specialised courses and for future professional practice in the field;
  • enable other students to place spatial planning issues and policy debates in a broader context and to engage in informed dialogue with professionals in the field.
 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

An open attitude towards social and economic problems.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Seminars with professionals active in the field of spatial planning. A field visit devoted to urban planning policies in the city of Maastricht.
The field visit in Maastricht is organised on a Saterday.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

- 15 hours of theoretical lectures - 15 hours of workshops and practical exercises - 1 day of fieldworks

25-minute oral exam with 25 minutes of preparation

Additional information:

An oral exam (100% of the quotation) made of questions related to the theoretical lectures, the seminars and the field visit.

Depending on the number of students, the assessment may take the form of a written examination. Students who receive a grade of 7, 8 or 9 in the written examination, as well as those who pass but wish to improve their grade, will have the opportunity to take an oral examination at the end of the examination period. The final grade will then be the average of the grades obtained in the two examinations.

The date of the field visit in Maastricht will be decided at the first theoretical course.
