Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The topography course provides a broad overview of the main topometric operations, including geometric and trigonometric levelling, traversing, connection to existing control, intersection, resection and free station, and setting out.
The course also introduces the instruments used for these operations, including levels, the theodolite and the total station, together with the checks required to assess the validity and acceptability of the results.
The theoretical lectures are complemented by three mandatory field practicals.
Each fieldwork session requires the submission of a written report, and the completion and submission of these reports is a mandatory prerequisite to be admitted to the exam.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- to acquire a basic understanding of the main topographic operations and their practical methods;
- to acquire a basic understanding of surveying instruments and their main sources of error;
- to acquire a basic understanding of measurement quality
- to be able to carry out and control basic topographic measurements and computations;
- to be able to independently carry out a small-scale surveying work
- to be able to communicate surveying results clearly and effectively in a professional geomatics context.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- Good knowledge of basic mathematics (geometry, trigonometry), as well as of some elements of general physics (optical and electronic mechanics, gravity)
- Use of spreadsheets for calculations and/or programming scripts
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Theoretical lectures present each operation with its instruments, its computation and its checks, and work examples.
Three mandatory field practicals put them into practice in a problem-based setting: a closed levelling loop (TP1), a closed traverse with a total station (TP2) and a setting-out with a total station (TP3).
Each fieldwork session requires the submission of a written report, and the completion and submission of these reports is a mandatory prerequisite to be admitted to the exam.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
- Microsoft Teams
Further information:
The course slides will be made available on Teams and will be regularly updated after each lecture.
In addition, many recent reference books, most of them in English, are available at the Earth Sciences library.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( open-ended questions )
Written work / report
Further information:
The assessment has two components, both of which count towards the final result:
(1) the written reports of the three field practicals, each of which is assessed;
(2) a written examination consisting of both practical exercises and open theoretical questions.
Attendance at fieldwork sessions is mandatory.
Each fieldwork session requires the submission of a written report, and the completion and submission of these reports is a mandatory prerequisite to be admitted to the exam.
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The course will be taught in English.
