Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course "Geospatial Data Collection" aims to familiarize students with the fundamental principles related to the collection and analysis of geospatial data.

The learning process is structured around two complementary approaches:

  • Theoretical lectures, providing the necessary conceptual foundations;
  • Laboratory sessions and practical fieldwork sessions, enabling students to directly apply theoretical knowledge and gradually progress towards the final project.

Attendance at fieldwork sessions is mandatory.

Each lab/fieldwork session requires the submission of a written report, and the completion and submission of these reports is a mandatory prerequisite to be admitted to the exam.

 Topics covered

  • General principles and workflows for geospatial data collection
  • Reference surfaces and coordinate systems
  • Fundamentals of topography, positioning and photogrammetry
  • Surveying instruments and data acquisition methods
  • Fundamentals of remote sensing and geospatial data analysis
  • Retrieval, management and analysis of geospatial data

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Ability to analyze a real-world situation or problem and propose an appropriate method for collecting the required geospatial data
  • Acquisition of basic knowledge of geospatial data collection instruments, methods and analysis platforms
  • Production of professional-level deliverables (maps, reports) based on collected geospatial data

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

  • Geodesy fundamentals
  • Geometry and trigonometry
  • Physics fundamentals (optical and electronic mechanics, gravity)
  • Use of word processing softwares
  • Use of spreadsheets and/or programming scripts
  • Familiarity with GIS tools
  • Ability to prepare slide presentations

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Each theoretical lecture is reinforced by lab and/or practical fieldwork sessions, providing students with the opportunity to directly apply theoretical knowledge and progressively advance toward the final project.

Attendance at fieldwork sessions is mandatory.

Each lab/fieldwork session requires the submission of a written report, and the completion and submission of these reports is a mandatory prerequisite to be admitted to the exam.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Further information:

This is a face-to-face course.

Theoretical lectures as well as laboratory sessions and/or practical sessions take place at the scheduled times indicated in the course timetable.

Attendance at fieldwork sessions is mandatory.

Each lab/fieldwork session requires the submission of a written report, and the completion and submission of these reports is a mandatory prerequisite to be admitted to the exam.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
- Microsoft Teams

Further information:

The course slides will be made available on Teams and will be regularly updated after each lecture.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Further information:

During the oral examination, students will present and discuss their final project, drawing on the practical and theoretical content covered during the course.

The final project must be accompanied by a written report documenting the data collection and processing procedures, the methods and instruments used, the results obtained, and their interpretation. During the oral examination, students may be asked to explain and justify their methodological choices, discuss the quality and limitations of the results, and demonstrate their understanding of the theoretical principles underlying the methods and instruments used in the project.

Attendance at fieldwork sessions is mandatory.

Each lab/fieldwork session requires the submission of a written report, and the completion and submission of these reports is a mandatory prerequisite to be admitted to the exam.
