Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

In this course, students will learn the different aspects that underly the electrical activity of neurons at a cellular/network level and the all the different methods to record it. This course is divided in five chapters:

  • Physiology and pharmacology of ion channels
  • Basis for neuronal excitability
  • Biological Neuronal Network and multielectrode array (MEA) recordings
  • Optophysiology
  • Learning on a chip
Moreover, mandatory praticals will be undertaken, which consist of designing and performing an experiment in the Life Lab of the Neuroengineering Laboratory and analysis of the aquired data and a given set of data.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this teaching unit, students will be able to understand the basics of experimental neurophysiology, enabling them to interact with neurophysiologists and develop multidisciplinary projects.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Participative oral lectures: explanation of presented slides while students are encouraged to interrupt and ask questions.

Practical courses mandatory !

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Platform(s) used for course materials:
- Microsoft Teams

Further information:

No written notes are given to the students. Copies of the slides are e-mail to all students before each course and students are encouraged to take notes.

No mandatory reading other than slides and personal notes.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Further information:

Assessment is in 2 parts:

  • Oral exam (60%)
The student draws two questions which he prepares for 20min before being questioned orally for 20min. The student's theoretical knowledge (20%) and reasoning ability (40%) will be evaluated during the exam. Questions may be prepared using course notes.

  • Presentation (40%)
Students must present the conclusions of their analyses of all the data provided and collected during the lab sessions through an oral presentation and a written report. Following the presentation, a question-and-answer session will be held to discuss the methods and approaches used to reach these conclusions and to consider hypothetical additional experiments that could support them. The presentation, the written report, and the answers to the questions will be taken into account for the final grade.
