Learning unit contents

This course presents various renewable energy sources: solar, wind, biomass, and hydropower. For each energy sector, the course covers the resource, capture and conversion technologies, sizing considerations, and simulation models.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Understand, explain, and analyse the resources, capture technologies, conversion technologies, and storage systems related to the energy sectors covered.
- Carry out preliminary sizing and assess the production and/or consumption of the systems studied in order to analyse the economic relevance of the proposed solution.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic notions in physics, chemistry and thermodynamics.
Use of a spreadsheet (Excel).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In addition to the activities scheduled in the course timetable, a visit to one or more renewable energy production sites will be organised (hydropower, biomethane, wind energy, photovoltaics, or other technologies).

Further information:

A first note is obtained through a project with a written report (submitted before the start of the session) and an oral presentation (during the session). The project is assessed as follows:

  • 50% - Technical section: quality of calculations, methodological rigour, validity of assumptions.
  • 25% - Financial section: relevance of economic and financial analyses, soundness of assumptions.
  • 25% - Communication skills: quality of the oral presentation, clarity and structure of the written document, ability to convince.
The note is individual, even if the project is carried out in a team. It will be adjusted according to the involvement of each student, assessed in particular during follow-ups and the final presentation. Regarding the use of artificial intelligence, all prompts used and the results must be attached in appendix. In case of misuse, students will receive a grade of 0/20.

A second note is assessed through oral questions about the part that were not involved in the project. The final note is obtained as follows: two thirds for the project and one third for the three oral questions (linked to the first learning outcome)
The same conditions apply in the second session. If the project is unsuccessful, a new study on a new subject may be requested: the teaching team will specify its expectations on the day the January session papers are reviewed.
