Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Description of the course unit: General introduction to the discipline of systems analysis to study, understand, and manage an environmental problem.

Table of contents: The concept of a system and the modelling approach. The different formats used to represent models: state models, input-output models, and responses to standard inputs. Methodology for model development: conceptual models and quantitative models. Concepts of stability, resilience, regulation, and simulation. Application of systems analysis methods to the evaluation of a sustainable development project in an environmental context.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse a complex environmental project using a systems perspective and apply the course methodology to other complex environmental situations.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Mathematics fundamentals (functions, derivatives, integrals, fundamentals of differential equations)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course will include theoretical lectures and practical exercises. Students will work in groups. The number of students per group will be determined later.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Further information:

In-person lectures and practical alternating between classes in French and English.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus

Further information:

Copy of the Power Point presentations available.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( open-ended questions )

Further information:

The evaluation is written without class notes. It evaluates the capability of the students to apply the methodology to an other environmental problem. It also checks if the fundamental elements of systems analysis are well understood by the students

Work placement(s)

No work placements

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Course slides will be available after each lesson on myULiege - eCampus. Minor changes to the course organization may be made as necessary.
