Learning unit contents

The aim of the course is to explore all aspects of specimen collection, particularly the pre-analytical phase during which many errors can occur, as well as the analytical and post-analytical phases.
All types of equipment available for specimen collection will also be covered, along with the main rules of asepsis.

Practical work (lab sessions):
Performing blood draws using a needle, a butterfly needle, and placing various types of venous catheters on artificial and human arms.

The ultimate goal is to apply specimen collection techniques from both a theoretical and practical perspective.

  • Aseptic recommendations during the collection of biological samples
  • Prevention of exposure incidents involving blood and other biological fluids
