German didactics: introduction to scientific texts

Learning unit contents

The course content is based on selected didactic text excerpts, covering the following five topics:

  • Tips for developing reading comprehension of scientific texts
  • Learning a foreign language
  • Teaching grammar in a foreign language
  • Teaching vocabulary in a foreign language
  • Global approaches to teaching German as a foreign language


 

 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Thoroughly understand the provided didactic texts;
  • Relate the didactic content of the texts to each other;
  • Use the content of the texts to initiate a didactically oriented reflection on teaching German as a foreign language;
  • Support their own didactic reflection using arguments drawn from the texts.


 

 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

B2 level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in German and French

 

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is based on both interactive (in-class) and autonomous (at-home) reading of didactic specialist texts. The reading is accompanied by exercises aimed at deepening understanding and fostering reflection. These exercises are done individually, in pairs, or in small groups, then reviewed and discussed together.

The texts on "Global Concepts of Foreign Language Teaching" must be studied independently and are part of the final exam. A discussion forum on the institutional eCampus platform is available from the beginning of the course until one week before the exam, where students can ask questions about the self-study texts.

The course is organized into four in-person sessions of three hours each and concludes with a written exam. There is also homework between sessions and in preparation for the exam.

The in-person sessions take place on February 2, 9, 16, and March 2, 2026 (3 hours each in the morning from 9 00 to 12 00).

The course will be taught mainly in German.

Texts, exercise instructions, and other teaching and learning materials will be provided on the institutional eCampus platform and can be downloaded. Apart from handouts distributed in the in-person sessions, students are responsible for printing any digital materials.

The reading materials are mainly drawn from the following three key references in German as a foreign language didactics:

Further information:

A written exam will take place in June 2026 (with a resit opportunity in August 2026). The exam lasts two and a half hours. Students may bring and use printed course materials. However, computers and mobile devices are strictly prohibited.

The exam will include two or three tasks aligned with the course's learning objectives. Emphasis will be on in-depth understanding of the course content and the ability to reflect and argue effectively. Spelling errors should be avoided as much as possible, but will only be penalized if excessive.

Students may complete one or two tasks in their native language (French for French-speaking students, German for German-speaking students). However, at least one task must be completed in the foreign language (German for French speakers, French for German speakers). Therefore, mastering didactic terminology in both German and French is required.

Plagiarism - i.e., copying excerpts from texts word-for-word without quotation marks and proper source citation - will automatically result in exam resit or failure.
