Integrative practical work in paediatric speech therapy is a rich source of teaching material. Through numerous sessions presenting concepts and exercises (minimum 8 hours per week), it aims to:

  • Support the development of clinical reasoning;
  • Reactivate and use the material taught in the Bachelor's, using cases close to real practice;
  • Encourage links between the main fields of paediatric speech therapy (oral language, written language, mathematical cognition);
  • Learn how to take account of the individual features of each patient;
  • Support evidence-based practice;
  • Develop communication and collaboration skills;
  • Provide a common foundation for all students before they embark upon their internships.

  • Conduct a closing interview with the patient and/or their family ;
  • Build a treatment plan ;

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

See the pedagogical engagement of each party.

Practical work is organised around four types of activities:

- Behind the scenes of an assessment: active observation of a speech therapy assessment carried out in a real-life situation at the CPLU by the course lecturer. 3 x 2 hours in Q1

- 360° assessment/rehabilitation: classroom discovery of the assessment and rehabilitation process in paediatric speech therapy, based on a clinical vignette. 5 x 8 hours in Q2

- Clinilab assessment/rehabilitation: training in pairs on how to prepare an assessment, conduct an exploratory interview, administer and correct patient protocols, write an assessment and conduct a conclusion interview; with personalised feedback. 7 x 8 hours in Q2

- 360° express: morning review of concepts covered during the year. 1 x 4 hours in Q2

The clinical vignettes, which are worked on during the sessions, are taken from consultations carried out at the CPLU (University Psychological and Speech Therapy Clinic) at ULiège. For several activities, students must practise their skills with a child or adolescent from the general public and a parent from their circle (specific instructions will be provided during the first class). Finally, some exercises will be carried out within the MOOC 'EBP au service du patient' (EBP at the service of the patient) developed by several faculty teachers.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

See the pedagogical engagement of each party.

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

Students' engagement, curiosity and active involvement is essential to increase the quantity and quality of their clinical learning. Experiential learning is at the heart of this approach, and it is not possible to acquire the same skills outside the sessions.

Further information:

During the oral exam, students will be given three clinical scenarios. They must succeed in each scenario to obtain a final grade of 10/20. The average of the grades obtained over the three scenarios will then be calculated to reach the final grade. If the student fails one or more of the scenarios, then the final grade will be that of the (worst) grade.
