Learning unit contents

The course provides a theoretical perspective on stylistics and textual analysis, a literary analysis method developed by Etienne Servais. It also presents key concepts of narratology (text analysis) and stylistics (main figures of speech).

The course also includes a practical component focused on the analysis of texts from various genres and time periods.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The student will be able to analyze modern French literary texts (from the 16th to the 20th century) from a stylistic perspective (Michael Riffaterre's intuitive method, "Liège-style" textual analysis) and a narratological one (in accordance with the theoretical concepts presented in Genette's "Figures III"). Narratology and stylistics will be understood through the lens of literary translation.

The student will demonstrate discernment in choosing theoretical tools (e.g., method and dictionary). They will be able to provide a relevant and rigorous analysis of a literary text not previously studied.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A very good command of the French language is required (B2 or even C1).

Final grades with decimals of .8 and .9 will be rounded up to the next whole number. For example, a grade of 7.6/20 will not be rounded up to 8/20.

 

June and September Sessions  

The evaluation will first consist of a written exam.

  • Students who achieve a 10/20 on this written exam will be exempt from the oral exam (or the written retake).

  • Students with a grade between 8 and 9.9/20 will be asked to revise their exam paper remotely within a limited time frame under the instructor's supervision. A date for this written retake is set on the session schedule.

  • Students with a grade below 8/20 must take the oral exam, which will focus on texts analyzed during the course. A correction of the written exam and a review of stylistic or narratological concepts may also be requested during the oral exam.

The written exam consists of analyzing texts not studied in class. It will cover the following points, though not all may be included in the same session:

  • A textual analysis of a prose text or a poem.

  • A narratological analysis of a prose text.

  • Writing a sequel to a novel, taking into account the specific narratological features of the text.
