Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Terminology Code). They will be able to grasp and explain the values of verbal moods and tenses, to grasp the differences and nuances of meaning attached to them, and to identify the errors that their misuse generates. Finally, they will have a thorough knowledge of the spelling rules of the French language."

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

No prerequisite knowledge, but C1 level for non-native speakers.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Duration and Period: 60 hours (30 hours of grammar and 30 hours of spelling).

Organization: The course is taught by F. Neven (grammar analysis module: subject matter covered in points 1 and 2, and spelling module), by E. Voidanidis and by C. Leveau (spelling module: subject matter covered in points 3 and 4).

Schedule and Location: The class is divided into two groups. By the end of the year, both groups will have completed both modules (grammar and spelling).

The grammar module will be given in the 1st semester according to the following schedule:

  • Seminar with personalized supervision (in small groups*, on a voluntary basis): Mondays, from 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.; ULiège, TI site, rue de Pitteurs, L5 2.8 (Danica Seleskovitch room).

  • Large group class: Wednesdays, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. (ULiège, place du XX-Août, Hena Maes-Jelinek room - Grand Physique amphitheater).

*The groups for the Monday seminar will be formed during the first class, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

The spelling module (F. Neven, E. Voidanidis, and C. Leveau) will be given in the 2nd semester (schedule and classrooms to be announced in December).

Teaching and Learning Methods: The course is based on exercises, most of which are compiled in the syllabus. All exercises are accompanied by theoretical details explained in the reference grammars (1) and reformulated by the instructor. The exercises, whether done in class or at home, are corrected by the instructor. Student participation during the theoretical class is essential, as is the regular preparation of exercises at home. A certain amount of personal investment from the students outside of class hours is therefore required. Based on exercises done in class or at home, and on theoretical contributions with a practical purpose, the instruction provided values student participation, group interactions, and personal involvement.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

In-person classes.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam

Further information:

Only grades with decimals of 0.8 and 0.9 will be rounded up to the next whole number. For example, a grade of 7.6/20 will not be changed to 8/20.

January session:

  • Written exam for the grammar module, including one or more multiple-choice questions (MCQs) or open-ended questions. The MCQs may be based on a (+1/-1) model.

June session:

  • Written exam for the spelling module, including one or more MCQs, open-ended questions, a dictation, a text to be corrected, and possibly other exercises.

  • Written exam (second chance) for the grammar module (exam format identical to the January session). Students who did not pass the grammar module in January (grade below 10/20) are required to take the written exam organized during the June session. Consequently, these students will be tested on both modules of the Grammar course in June.

The final grade corresponds to the sum of the grades obtained for the grammar module and the spelling module.

September session:

  • Written exam covering both course modules according to the procedures defined for the June session (final grade = 50% of the grammar grade + 50% of the spelling grade), even if one of the two modules was passed in June or January.

The evolving health situation may justify changes to the student evaluation procedure (online written or oral exams).

Work placement(s)

No work placements.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The groups are created at the beginning of the year. Students need the approval of teachers if they want to change groups.
