Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students will be able to identify certain language use which does not conform to standard French, whether this be specific terms, turns of phrase or language register. Students will be able to rework a text clearly and coherently in formal French, based on a clumsily written text with missing words and mistakes of all kinds.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
No prerequisite knowledge, but C1 level for non-native speakers.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Duration and Period: 60 hours (30 hours of grammar and 30 hours of spelling).
Organization: The course is taught by F. Neven (grammar analysis module: material covered in points 1 and 2, and spelling module), by E. Voidanidis and by C. Leveau (spelling module: material covered in points 3 and 4).
Schedule and Location: The class is divided into two groups. By the end of the year, both groups will have completed both modules (grammar and spelling).
The grammar module will be given in the first semester according to the following schedule:
-
Seminar with personalized coaching (in small groups, on a voluntary basis): Monday, 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.; ULiège, TI campus, rue de Pitteurs, L5 2.8 (Danica Seleskovitch room);
-
Large group lecture: Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. (ULiège, place du XX-Août, Hena Maes-Jelinek room - "Grand Physique" amphitheater).
The spelling module (F. Neven, E. Voidanidis and C. Leveau) will be given in the second semester (schedule and classrooms will be announced in December).
Teaching and Learning Methods: The course is based on exercises, most of which are in the syllabus. All exercises are accompanied by theoretical explanations found in the reference grammars (1) and rephrased by the teacher. The exercises, whether done in class or at home, are corrected by the teacher. Student participation during the theoretical class is essential, as is the regular at-home preparation of exercises. Therefore, a certain level of personal investment from the students outside of class hours is required. Based on exercises done in class or at home, and on practical theoretical contributions, the teaching approach values student participation, group interactions, and personal involvement.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

January Session:
- Written exam for the grammar module, including one or more multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and/or open-ended questions. MCQs may be based on the (+1/-1) model.
- Written exam for the spelling module, including one or more MCQs, open-ended questions, a dictation, a text to correct, and, potentially, other exercises.
- Written exam (second chance) for the grammar module (exam modalities are identical to those of the January session).
- Students who did not pass the grammar module in January (grade below 10/20) are required to take the written exam organized during the June session. Consequently, these students will be tested on both modules of the Grammar course in June.
- The final grade corresponds to the sum of the grades obtained for the grammar module and the spelling module.
- In-person evaluation will be preferred.
- In the case of remote evaluation, it will take place on the TEAMS platform.
- The evaluation will consist of a single individual written exam. It will be conducted on a single day. Students will be asked to connect to TEAMS according to a set schedule. They will be gathered in small groups or, if numbers allow, in a large group, so that the exam can be supervised by the teacher. The camera must be on and the microphone must be open.
- Written exam covering both course modules according to the modalities defined for the June session (final grade = 50% of the grammar grade + 50% of the spelling grade), even if one of the two modules was passed in June or January.
- Changes in the health situation could justify changes to the student evaluation procedure (online written or oral exams).
Work placement(s)
No work placements.
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
For MODULE 1, the large group lecture will be held on Wednesday. The seminar with personalized coaching will be held in small groups, according to a schedule to be established on Wednesday, September 17.
