Learning unit contents

The course offers

(a) a theoretical and practical introduction to the translation of different text types (informative, persuasive, expressive texts) from French into Dutch. The topics that will be covered will mainly be of a general nature (e.g. society, tourism, education, environment, health), although some more specific topics (e.g. literature, economics, law) may also be introduced. (Semi-)authentic texts will be preferred.

(b) acquiring strategies and skills involved in translation into the foreign language and providing students with guidelines for critical reflection on their own translation work.

(c) French-Dutch contrastive strategies, focusing on syntactic and morphological differences between Dutch and French.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Strategies specific to translation into the foreign language; decoding the implemented translating processes; contrastive knowledge of French and Dutch; identifying the impact of different text types on translation strategies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Translation exercises (as a group and individual exercises); Oral presentation of a translation exercise and a theoretical text.

Further information:

  • Oral presentation of a translation exercise, cannot be rescheduled (15% of the final grade).
  • Presentation of a theoretical article, cannot be rescheduled (15% of the final grade).
At the end of the first term:

  • A written translation test (2 hours, translation of an unknown text; 70% of the final grade).
