Learning unit contents
As part of the Theory and Practice of Translation from Spanish to French II course, students will translate authentic and varied texts (in terms of subject matter, style, function and target audience, among other factors) written in Spanish into French. Some of these texts will be chosen based on students' final dissertation projects and areas of interest.
As a continuation of the Theory and Practice of Translation from Spanish to French I course, this course will enable students to
- further enrich their translation strategies from Spanish to French through the reading and analysis of translation studies texts, and
- develop their ability to produce, orally or in writing, a metalinguistic reflection on their own practices.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- identify translation issues specific to the texts they are required to translate;
- apply the most appropriate translation strategies to the texts in question, based on translation studies sources;
- write translation comments using translation studies sources.

Very good proficiency in Spanish and perfect mastery of French

During the course, students will be required to give a short oral presentation on a translation concept related to their dissertation topic (10% of the total mark). Detailed instructions will be given during the course and posted on eCampus. If students do not complete this part of the assessment, they will receive a mark of 0 for the oral presentation.
On the first day of the January exam session, students will be required to submit a translation portfolio (75% of the total mark), consisting of:
* on the one hand, the translation of a text (approximately 500 words) that they have not seen before, written in Spanish and not yet translated, chosen by the student according to their interests (but different from the text that is the subject of their dissertation) and
* a translation commentary (approximately 1,000 words), which will draw on at least three translation studies sources and will be assessed on the quality of its writing and structure.
The use of AI and machine translation tools is prohibited for the preparation of the portfolio.
During the January session, students will defend their portfolio orally in a 15-minute interview with the professor (15% of the total mark). The oral defence is compulsory. If students do not attend this part, they will receive a mark of 0 for the oral exam and for the translation portfolio.
