Learning unit contents

This course will provide students with an introduction to sustainable animal production at the global level, as well as the fundamentals of animal science, with a particular focus on the "animal" aspects. The main topics covered will be:

  • Domestication and history of livestock farming worldwide, including urban and peri-urban livestock production;

  • Classification of animal genetic resources (farm animals) and their main adaptive traits to the living environment;

  • Main breeds of domestic livestock species and identification of cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, and equines (excursion to the Paris International Agricultural Show);

  • Introduction to farming systems and to the genetic improvement of farm animals.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course the students should be able to understand the different, global aspects of animal farming activities and livestock production through the focus "animal" preparing the following "technical" classes in animal production.

  • Excursion (4h): visit to the Paris International Agricultural Show (SIA) - identification of cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, and equines
NB: The excursion to the Paris International Agricultural Show (SIA) is organized in collaboration with the GxABT alumni association, AIGx. It will take place on Sunday February 22, 2026. Participation is mandatory.
