Learning unit contents

The book on the program is Capital: Volume 1 by Karl Marx. The course has two objectives:

  • To read, discuss, and interpret the text of Volume 1
  • To evaluate the relevance of Marx's critical tool in light of the evolution of capitalism and its current form

to understand the context, the philosopher's thought and the book, and also the philosophical issues involved by this book

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good level of philosophical knowledge; basic knowledge of the fundamental ideas of Marx and Marxism.

The course will be held in Q1, Thursday 1-4pm. It will mainly consist of
presentations by the teacher, other researchers and (if applicable)
students of Philosophy.

Karl Marx, Le Capital. Critique de l'économie politique. Livre I, translated by J-P. Lefebvre. There are two editions of this text:

(1) PUF, Collection Quadrige, 1993 (1st ed. 1983);

(2) Éditions sociales, 2022 (1st ed. 2016).

 

As the numbering in (2) refers to (1), students may choose the edition of their choice.

 

The German reference text is the 4th edition established by F. Engels: Karl Marx, Das Kapital. Kritik der Politischen Ökonomie. Buch I., Dietz Verlag, Berlin, 1960. (An electronic edition is available: http://www.mlwerke.de/me/me23/me23_011.htm).

The course is based on two commentaries
