Learning unit contents
The World as Will and Representation: a reading.
This course will offer a study of Arthur Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation. The aim is to provide an introduction to the thought of this author, who is essential to the transition from modern to contemporary philosophy, but little studied for his own sake. We will particular attention to the transformation he proposes of Kant's critical philosophy. By successively studying two major notions, representation (Book I) and will (Book II), we will address various aspects of Schopenhauerian thought, from the theory of knowledge to metaphysics. We will also consider the place of aesthetics in Schopenhauer's thought (book III).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this teaching unit, the student will be able to account for the major philosophical and metaphysical positions of Schopenhauer and to account for his differences from Kant, especially when commenting on a texte taken from Schopenhauer's work.
