Learning unit contents

Divine knowledge

The course is an introduction to the history of medieval philosophy dealing with the problem of divine knowledge. It will be based on a large selection of medieval texts.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To introduce students to issues and methods that make up the specificity of Medieval Philosophy.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

After a general introduction, the course will examine a number of typical positions in the debate on divine science; students will be introduced to the specificities of philosophical and theological argumentation in the Middle Ages and, inseparably, to the reading and commentary of a set of founding texts.

We will work with a choice of texts distributed during the class and made available on MyULiege. The principle textebook will be J.-Ch. Bardout et O. Boulnois, Sur la science divine, Paris, PUF, 2002.

3-hour writing examination including 2 questions on the course itself and 1 explanation of a short text taken from texts studied during the class.
