The internships organized in the second year of the Bachelor's degree in Oral Hygiene are observation internships (passive internships) or active internships. Their purpose is to familiarize students with their future professional environment.

Access to the Block 2 internship is subject to:

? The obligation to submit the required information for an external internship project in a dental practice

? Passing AIP 1, the EU Dental Hygiene and Diagnostics course, and the EU Special Anatomy and Physiology course

? Submission of the document acknowledging knowledge of the ULiège and HEPL AIP regulations

? Submission of the document acknowledging knowledge of the CHU de Liège ethics and safety charter.

? Mandatory attendance at two orientation sessions organized by HEPL and ULiège

During passive internships (ULiège Dentistry Department and private practice), students will observe how a dentist specializing in one of the fields of dentistry manages their schedule (adherence to timetables), cares for their patients (listening and communicating with patients, prioritizing treatments), providing the necessary care (anticipating and dealing with difficulties), and completing medical records (medical history, care provided, etc.).

The dental hygienist intern will actively participate in welcoming patients and will assist the dentist in their treatment activities (four-handed work).

Under the supervision of the office staff or practice staff, the intern will prepare the equipment and biomaterials needed to perform the various treatments provided by the dentist. They will also apply the rules of asepsis and cleanliness required in a dental practice. Finally, they will learn the basics of sterilization by clearing treatment tables themselves and following the advice and instructions of the sterilization staff.

Although the observation internship is a passive internship, the student must demonstrate a certain degree of proactivity. They will be involved and demonstrate a high level of availability to the dental interns and room staff. Availability means that the student must be effectively and efficiently present in the room during all their internship hours.

With regard to active internships, the dental hygienist intern will take charge of patients under the supervision of clinical staff in order to develop their future professional skills. An evaluation form will be completed by one of the staff members after each patient is treated.
