Theory
Theoretical Courses
Italian Grammar: spelling, phonology, nominal and verbal morphology of Italian.
Syntax of the simple sentence.
Grammatical terminology.
Elements of geography, history and culture.
These elements may be explored using a variety of materials (texts, images, videos, podcasts, etc.).
Others
Cultural activities (screenings, performances, lectures, visits, etc.) will be organized. These are an integral part of the course program and may be subject to evaluation. Organizational details will be communicated to students in due course.

The practical sessions aim to develop the following skills:
- Listening Comprehension: Listening to texts and explanation.
- Reading Comprehension: Progressive reading of sentences and short texts; reading of a classic Italian literary work.
- Oral Production: Description of images, people, places; expression of an opinion; reporting on an activity, etc.
- Written Production: Dictation and exercises, transformation and composition of sentences, and then short texts (formal messages, summaries, opinions, experiences), with imposed morphological and syntactic elements.

Theory
By the end of this teaching unit, the student will be able to:
- Pronounce an Italian text with appropriate pronunciation;
- Answer questions about phonology, morphology, and syntax of the simple sentence in Italian;
- Use the appropriate terminology to describe the grammatical elements covered in the course;
- Apply the prescriptive grammar rules studied throughout the year;
- Reapply the vocabulary used during theoretical and practical lessons;
- Understand and produce simple texts in Italian;
- Understand and produce correct oral statements on familiar topics or those covered in class;
- Summarize in Italian all or part of a work seen or read, express an opinion about it, and describe its main elements (themes, characters, settings).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Theory
A good command of French grammatical analysis is required (nature/class of words/parts of speech; functions/dependency relationships and hierarchy of dependency relationships; coordination and subordination). Prof. Nicolas Mazziotta's syllabus on grammatical analysis is a useful reference (see LROM0106).

Cultural activities (screenings, performances, lectures, visits, etc.) will be organized. These are an integral part of the course program and may be subject to evaluation. Organizational details will be communicated to students in due course.
Optional conversation classes will be provided by student tutors for students wishing to develop their oral production skills. Information about these activities will be provided in class during the first weeks of the course.

To develop production and comprehension skills, both oral and written, the following activities may be proposed:
- Transformation exercises with imposed morphological and syntactic elements;
- Listening to texts, summarizing, paraphrasing;
- Progressive reading of sentences and short texts;
- Reading of a classic Italian literary work;
- Sentence composition;
- Composition of short texts (formal and informal messages, description of images, people, places); expression of an opinion; reporting on an activity, etc.;
- Dictations.
Formative assessments will be offered throughout the year.

The partial exam organized in January is not exempting. The January grade will count for 20% of the overall June grade if successful (= 10/20). If the grade is insufficient (< 10/20), it will not affect the overall grade.
The written exam consists of a grammar test (transformation exercises, conjugation, etc.), a short essay, and a dictation, according to the formats practiced during the year in practical exercise classes. The written exam grade will count for 25% of the overall June grade.
In January and in June, the student will present the oral exam provided they have achieved a score of 7/20 or more on the written exam. If the number of students registered for the August exams is below 20, the instructors may choose not to enforce this restriction.
The oral exam may cover the entire course (theory, exercises, readings, visits, films, and performances). The following criteria will be considered: mastery of content, adequacy of responses to questions, pronunciation, active and passive control of grammatical and lexical resources, ability to self-correct.
Achieving a passing grade on the written exam does not exempt from the written test during the following session.
The use of artificial intelligence is strictly prohibited.

Theory
The theoretical course is held throughout the year on Thursdays, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
Organizational details of the cultural activities will be communicated to students in due course.
Practice
The practical sessions (2 per week, on Mondays and/or Thursdays) are conducted by the instructor.
The schedule and group assignments can be consulted at the notice boards next to the instructor's office and on eCampus starting from the second week of classes.
Student tutors will contact students by email to arrange conversation tables.
