Learning unit contents
First, we will define the specificity and challenges of pragmatics in relation to the field of linguistics and its other areas of study and research.
We will then consider the different approaches to pragmatics, whether within the framework of the philosophy of language, interactional linguistics or the linguistics of enunciation.
Finally, we will suggest ways of thinking about the resources of pragmatics for analysing different communication situations.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Introduce the participants to the principles and to the debates of pragmatics, and give them an opportunity to understand its issues and to put them into discussion.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A basic knowledge of linguistic theory and analysis.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Theoretical presentations alternate with practical exercises in which students are invited to provide examples for analysis and discuss them together.
At the end of the course, students present to the class their interpretation of a speech (oral or written) based on the analytical concepts of linguistic pragmatics.
