Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

In-depth study of a major classical author, a work, a period, a genre or a particular theme in Italian literature from its origins to the 16th century.

In 2025-2026, the course will focus on women and literature in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • justify the relevance of the theme studied and discuss it critically, without anachronism;
  • situate the authors and texts studied in both time and space (cultural, historical, and geopolitical context);
  • understand, discuss, and use the literary history concepts covered in the course (e.g., canon);
  • identify, analyze, paraphrase, and comment on the selected excerpts using appropriate terminology;
  • compare the authors and their works with both the literary tradition and their contemporaries;
  • give an account of the main works of the authors studied and the themes explored in their writings;
  • Answer questions about the assigned readings and performances attended, and make connections between them;
  • present this knowledge in correct Italian.
