Learning unit contents

Presentation of and lectures on foundational texts in Spanish literature, from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Commentary and critical analysis of required texts, placing them in relation to their historical and social context.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the term, students should be able to :

- read carefully and with sensitivity literary texts that are significantly remote in historical and geographical terms;

- independently write texts of around 300 words, in correct Spanish and in a formal register, clearly articulating the ideas;

- correctly use terms of narratology or cultural history in discussions on literary works.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Prior completion of the course in the History of Spanish Literature is highly recommended. In order to understand certain reading, questions, explanations and references students should possess at the end of the term at least an intermediate understanding of Spanish language (B1).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Writing of several essays with regard to the compulsory reading. All of these essays but one will be written in Spanish. A personal feedback will be given.

Besides ex cathedra teaching, this course contains directed discussions as well as exercices in smaller groups.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

This course will be taught in Spanish and according to a pedagogical model of digital sobriety. This means that students will not be allowed to use any electronic mobile devices during class.

In this course, reading and writing are considered not only as means of producing knowledge, but also as forms of knowledge on their own, which students are expected to master. The use of generative artificial intelligence is therefore explicitly and strongly discouraged in the intermediate written assignments - including for linguistic verification - and excluded altogether from the final exam.
