Learning unit contents

The course will focus on shorter texts (i.e. short stories, essays, extracts from novels) by the New Zealand writer Janet Frame (1924-2004).

After an overall introduction to the life, work and poetics of this writer, we shall discuss a selection of texts variously illustrating her stylistic elegance and her idiosyncratic conceptions about madness, fiction and creativity.

The above is meant as an attempt at familiarization and as an encouragement to further engage with Frame's novels (see below).

Compulsory reading:

A selection of shorter texts by Janet Frame will be made available through eCampus.

The students will also be invited to read one novel by Janet Frame, freely chosen by themselves, together with a short sample of relevant critical material, for presentation at the oral exam - see below.

An oral exam will provide the students with an opportunity to demonstrate the extent of their personal reflection about one Frame novel, based on a selection of critical material.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The course will be organized in the first term and take place in room A2-6/8 on Tuesdays (2-4pm) - to be confirmed. The first meeting will be held on 23rd September at 2pm. Everybody welcome.
