Learning unit contents

A series of texts illustrating a theme, a character or a classical author. Seneca, Lucretius, Titus Livy, the origins of Rome, Harotius, Seneca, Vergil, the emperor as seen by Ammianus Marcellinus. 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To show the various audiences concerned how a commentary, whether historical or literary, can only be based on direct contact with text, hence on a precise understanding and rigorous translation.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good knowledge of basic Latin.

Q1 oral exam : reading aloud one of the passages explained in class, retranslation, grammatical justification, commentary; questions on the book proposed.

The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 40% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
