Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course is both theoretical and practical. It offers an in-depth study of morphology and vocabulary, as well as a systematic examination of accentuation. An important component of the course focuses on the study of Greek syntax. There is also an introduction to Greek metrics. Exercises, prose composition, and translation from Ancient Greek.

Two independent readings: one prose text (first semester) and one poetry text (second semester). The sem. 1 reading will focus on Diodorus of Sicily, Library of History, XIV, 1-6 and 19-33. The sem. 2 reading will cover Hesiod, Works and Days, vv. 1-292, including scansion.

- eCampus

Further information:

- E. Ragon, Grammaire grecque.
- P. Collin, Vocabulaire grec : available on eCampus.

The first independent reading will be based on the Les Belles Lettres edition of Diodorus of Sicily, Library of History, XIV, 1-6 and 19-33 (vol. IX, ed. Eric R. Bennett and Martine Bonnet, CUF, 1997). For the second independent reading, we will once again use the Paris edition: Hesiod, Works and Days, vv. 1-292 (ed. Paul Mazon, CUF, 1928).

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam AND oral exam

- Remote

oral exam

Further information:

Tests during the year, written and oral examination in January and at the end of the academic year, with independent reading.

January : written exam of accentuation and morphology (50 %) and oral exam on the first independent reading (50 %).

June :  prose composition (40 %), translation from Greek into French (40 %), and oral exam on the second independent reading (20 %). This oral exam will take place before the session.

Please note that if you retake the partial examination in June and/or August, the proportional weighting of the different components of the examination will be adjusted: the prose composition and the translation from Greek into French will each be worth 30 % instead of 40 %, while each of the two independent readings will account for 20 % of the overall mark.

The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 35% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative (without however the first independent reading if > or = 10/20).
