- Further study of everyday English vocabulary by studying lists of thematic vocabulary provided by the teachers (via Lol@).
- Review and further study of grammar basics.
- Developing reading and listening comprehension skills.
- Communication practice in everyday and business English: brainstorming, meetings, negotiations, ...
- Self-learning through individual work (homework, revision of theoretical items, ...)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
In agreement with the ILOs, the course aims at developing and strengthening the four skills (listening and reading comprehension, oral and written expression) in the field of everyday and business English. the objective is to readh or maintain the B1 level of the European framework.
Strategy:
the course will allow students to establish a strategy in order to optimize the value chain of a company, an organisation or a project.

Communication:
The course will allow students to communicate efficiently, internally and externally, about a company, organisation or project
- in at least three languages, including English
- taking into account the multicultural and international features of their environment
Adaptability:
The course will encourage students to be curious and to show scientific precision of academic level in their studies as well as in their professional life.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
This is not a beginners' course. Students should have a good basic knowledge (Council of Europe level A2) of both grammar rules (synthetised in the 'Prérequis' coursebook) and elementary vocabulary.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
In-class sessions are divided into two main parts:
- systematic grammar revisions (with the syllabus English level 1)
- an introduction to business vocabulary and basic notions (through thematic chapters).
The students will also have to
- study basic vocabulary in the form of thematic lists available on Lol@, on which they will be interrogated at the exams in January, June and August;
- ensure that they have mastered the basic prerequisites of the language, using the prerequisite syllabus (also available on Lol@). These prerequisites will be explicitly included in the subject matter of January's exam, and underpin the general command of the language needed to pass June's exam (and, where applicable, August's exam).

Outside class hours, students will have homework, such as:
- revising various theory points each week ahead of the next class;
- studying vocabulary;
- exercises (texts to read, videos to watch, audio clips to listen to, etc.) to do or finish at home;
- preparing documents (whether analysed in class or not) that will form an integral part of the exam material.

Resources will be made available progressively on Lol@ (course code: LANG1951-1), but answers to exercises (whether grammar or course units) will never be provided. Students are therefore strongly advised to take their own notes and catch up if they miss any classes.

FIRST SESSION (JANUARY/JUNE)
Our written exams include various types of questions and assessment methods, such as (among others):
- MCQ or true/false with negative marks
- closed questions
- open questions
- grammar exercises
- translation (of words, expressions, or whole sentences)
- sentences to fil in
- ...
a) January's written exam:
- grammar (first semester's grammar revisions + "prérequis")
- vocabulary (first semester's units + first part of the lists of elementary vocabulary)
- content (questions about the concepts covered throughout the first semester's units)
- listening comprehension
b) June's written exam:
- grammar (second semester's grammar revisions)
- vocabulary (second semester's units + second part of the lists of elementary vocabulary)
- content (questions about the concepts covered throughout the second semester's units)
- listening comprehension
SECOND SESSION (AUGUST)
The exam will include the same parts as January's and June's exams, but will cover the whole year's stuff (grammar, "prérequis", in-class units, listening comprehension and lists of elementary vocabulary). No distinction will be made between the first and the second semesters' stuff.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
- If a student obtains a grade below 10/20 for January's exam, they'll have a choice whether to resit that part in June; WARNING, the grade obtained for that part in June will automatically replace January's grade, be it better or worse.
- August's exam covers the stuff of the whole year.
- Students who wish to go on Erasmus in Bloc 3 must obtain at least 12/20 for the course of English Level I.
- Copy consultation sessions are always organized shortly after the deliberations, at a time set and announced by the teachers, in order to allow students to have a look at their exam; outside those announced sessions, we do not communicate detailed grades by email, nor do we send students scanned versions of their exams.
