Learning unit contents

The course will be given by Prof. Olivier Malaise (in collaboration with M. Moutschen)

This course will present the main principles of immunopathology which must be known by all future health professionals: it will thus approach the classical general concepts of autoimmune pathology, hypersensitivity reaction, anti-infectious immunity and immune deficiency.

It will also emphasize three points of particular importance in the current daily practice of future health practitioners: the concepts of vaccination (including vaccinations against Covid), immunosuppressive drugs (selective or non-selective, whose use is increasingly wide) and the aging of the immune system (parallel to the aging of the population, through the concept of immuno-senescence).

It is also important that the course is relevant to the practice of future dentists. First of all, the oral cavity presents immunological particularities compared to other organs: the course will have to begin, by taking advantage of a brief recall of general immunology, by the presentation of the immunological particularities of the various tissues, like the periodontium or the osseous niches (through the concept of osteo-immunology). The exemplary pathologies that will illustrate the concepts of the course will be chosen among pathologies involving the dental sphere. For example, reactions to amalgam or local anaesthetics will illustrate the course on hypersensitivities and rheumatoid arthritis, whose trigger is the citrullination of certain proteins in the periodontium, will illustrate the course on autoimmune pathologies.

The course is divided into five chapters:

  • Immunodeficiency and HIV
  • Immune specificities of the oral cavity and osteoimmunology concepts
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Autoimmune Diseases and Autoinflammatory Diseases
  • Therapeutic modulation and aging of the immune system

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions ) AND oral exam

Written work / report

Further information:

Written Evaluation (MCQ - Short Answer Questions) and Assignment Submission

The written exam will consist of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), where one correct answer must be selected from several options, without a certainty coefficient.

The oral exam will have two parts:

  • A clinical case based on major concepts in immunopathology, to be explained after a preparation period.

  • A presentation of the main principles of vaccination, illustrated with the case of a specific vaccine. This presentation will be delivered orally during the oral exam. The specific topic of this presentation will have been given at the beginning of the year.
