Learning unit contents
This course focuses on the objectives, methods and philosophy of archaeological research in Prehistory. Following a chronological perspective, the course begins with human origins and the different factors (environmental, anatomic, technological, cultural) that influenced human evolution. The course then develops the study of the different hunter-gatherer societies during the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods. Finally, the course examines complex societies from the Neolithic and Metal Ages, beginning with economic and technological changes (sedentism, origins of agriculture and animal husbandry, consequences of metallurgy) that led progressively to modern complex human society.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Students are encouraged to reflect on the causes of the fundamental changes described in the chapters devoted to the emergence of humankind, then on the evolution brought about by the transition to the Neolithic and Metal Ages, towards increasingly unequal societies.
Mastering long-term chronology is one of the key learning outcomes.
