Learning unit contents
This seminar focuses on power relations, and more specifically on asymmetrical power relations, in prehistoric societies. These types of relationships are ubiquitous in interpersonal and collective human interactions, and have various causes that may be linked to the status of individuals (age, gender, wealth, etc.) and, more generally, to the forms of social and economic organisation of societies.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Using data from archaeology and related disciplines, students will be encouraged to reflect on the antiquity of (asymmetrical) power relations, the forms they may have taken among prehistoric populations, and some of their developments from the societies of the Palaeolithic to the first agro-pastoral societies. Issues related to (in)equality, gender relations, and the use of violence will be addressed.
Students will also practise producing their own research work, presented in oral and written form, on a subject related to the theme addressed in this seminar, developing rigorous, reasoned and critical thinking.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
It is preferable to have taken the Prehistory courses offered in the Bachelor's degree programme.
