Introduction (History of Protohistory, chronological framework, Neolithic and Neolithization) / Neolithization and Early Neolithic of the Near East / Other centers of Neolithization / The spread of the Neolithic in Europe: the Balkans, the Mediterranean area and the Danube area / The European Middle Neolithic / Megalithism and the Late Neolithic / The Chalcolithic and the Bell Beaker phenomenon / The Bronze Age (early, middle and late) / The first Iron Age: the Hallstatt culture / The second Iron Age (Scythians, Celts, Germans, etc.)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course examines complex societies from the Neolithic and Metal Ages, beginning with economic and technological changes (sedentism, origins of agriculture and animal husbandry) that led progressively to modern complex human society. Students will think about the reasons of such modifications, and then about the evolution after the beginning of the Metal Ages, towards societies with social inegalities more and more growing.

Further information:
Mid-term written multiple-choice exam in January (on the content of first-term lectures). The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 20% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
Written exam (open questions) during the June session for the part of the lectures.
The skills acquired during the practical work are subject to an oral assessment in June, the results of which are included (20%) with the mark of the written exam on the lectures.
