Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course provides an in-depth understanding of the principles and challenges inherent to the field of nutritional epidemiology. It reviews methodological considerations related to the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of data on dietary intake and nutritional status in the population or in population subgroups. The course also emphasizes the critical appraisal of research in the field, focusing on the relationships between nutrition and health. Finally, it addresses the translation of scientific findings into nutritional recommendations and policies.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Describe and compare epidemiological methods applied to nutrition, including their applications, strengths, and limitations.
- Select the most appropriate epidemiological method applied to nutrition for a given research question, type of nutritional epidemiology study, and target population.
- Describe and discuss analytical issues that affect the interpretation of data in nutritional epidemiology (e.g., under- and over-reporting, energy adjustment, etc.).
- Adequately choose and justify a research approach to quantitatively assess nutrition and its relationships with health.
- Cite examples of applications of nutritional epidemiology for practice, policy, and nutritional surveillance.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The course requires integrating knowledge of human nutrition with epidemiological and public health concepts. Proficiency in written English is necessary for the reading of texts in English.
