Economic analysis of healthcare systems - Organisation and financing
Based on the analyses of health care systems at the international level (Prof. Husden) and the Belgian system in particular (Prof. Husden and Prof. Collin), the aim of this section is to deepen the understanding of concepts using a specific analytical framework, that of economic science.
This section first addresses the characteristics of health care that justify government intervention in the sector, both in terms of organization and financing. It examines the concepts of supply and demand for health care services, as well as insurance coverage. The objectives of equity are discussed and illustrated with the results of empirical studies.
- Uncertainty, Externalities, Information Asymmetry: Three Characteristics of Health Care
- An Econometric Analysis of the Determinants of Health Care Expenditures
- The Demand for Health Care and Supply-Induced Demand
- Equity in Health Care Systems: Health Status (ISS), Health Care Consumption, and Financing

The grading for the exam is as follows:
Unless there is an official justification for absence, all four parts of the course material must be presented during the first session (January).
If the student has passed each of the assessments that make up the course unit ECON2304-1, the overall grade for the teaching unit is weighted as follows: 30-30-30-10 for the different parts (Fecher-Bourgeois, Husden, Collin, Porignon).
If the student has received at least one failing grade in any of the four assessments, the overall grade will be equal to the lowest grade achieved for the entire teaching unit.
A student who fails one or more parts of the course must retake the failed parts but may carry forward the grades for the passed assessments between the two sessions of the same academic year (January to August) and if necessary between different academic years.
