Learning unit contents

The course is divided in 4 parts:

- The BASH shell on Linux.
- The parallelisation (OpenMP and OpenMPI) and spatial interpolation in Fortran.
- The modules and allocate instructions to save memory in Fortran.
- Use of Python in the aim notably to build figures using climate data.  

Only the notions useful to be able to analyse climate model outputs and run afterwards the regional climate MAR model in CLIM0017 are taught here. 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end, the student will have the requirements to be able to run the MAR model in CLIM0017 and to analyse its outputs.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching method is mainly based on concrete examples on Linux illustrating the main notions of FORTRAN, Python and BASH for manipulating weather data or model outputs in NETCDF.

Additional information:

The oral exam (for both CLIM0017 and CLIM0024 courses) consists of presenting a parallelised FORTRAN/BASH program made by the student to compare MAR model outputs to gridded observations (e.g. ECA&D).
