Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course Contemporary Documentary (Cinema, Television, Web) focuses on films produced from the early 1990s to the present that engage with reality through unconventional modes of representation and discursive strategies, such as performative documentary, mockumentary, desktop documentary, animated documentary, among others. Through the study of these works, students will be encouraged to critically examine the aesthetic and socio-political stakes of contemporary documentary, while also engaging with the most recent theoretical developments in documentary film studies.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will be able to develop and apply analytical skills specific to contemporary documentary, drawing on aesthetics, media studies, and film analysis.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Passive knowledge of English (reading and listening comprehension).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is based on the viewing and analysis of documentary films. Analyses will be developed in collaboration with students, through guided questions that progressively deepen their understanding of each work. Each class session will conclude with a Q&A discussion on the assigned readings (see Required Readings). In addition, students are required to attend at least two screenings from the Territoires secrets series (co-organized by Les Grignoux and ULiège), the program of which will be announced at the beginning of the second semester.
