Learning unit contents
Botany
This course builds on the skills acquired in the Biology course. In particular, it details the organization of the major plant groups, provides notions of plant physiology as well as species ecology and the impact of global change.
Phytogeography
Using the concepts developed in the botany course, the phytogeography course adresses to the various aspects of the distribution of plant organisms. We will notably discuss the phenomena of species distribution, the co-existence mechanisms, the colonisation, the problem of invasive species and how occurs speciation.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Botany
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the main groups of plants and their evolutive traits, allowing these groups to diversify
- Describe the development cycles of the major plant groups
- Explain the main principles in plant ecology
- Use and understand basic botanical vocabulary
Phytogeography
You will be able to understand with the main concepts of phytogeography
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Botany
Advanced French knowledge
Phytogeography
This course is the continuation of the course "Biologie végétale - botanique".
Advanced French skill is needed.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Botany
The theoretical part consists of three parts:
- Introduction to plant biology
- Plant diversity and evolution
- Introduction to terrestrial plant ecology
The practicals and field trip are an integral part of the course. They illustrate the concepts studied in the theory course, provide a concrete way of approaching the subject and develop your reasoning in plant biology. For these practical exercises, you will observe living material, develop your critical and creative thinking skills, and work in groups to create a small identification key. The field trip will focus on discovering the morphological diversity within a plant family and their adaptations to climatic conditions. To do this, we'll visit the "Observatoire du monde des plantes" and the herbarium at the University of Liège.
Phytogeography
The lectures are followed by a field trip allowing to discover some vegetations and understand of the challenge of their conservation
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Botany

Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )
Written work / report
Further information:
The theoretical exam is written and consists of a multiple-choice questionnaire with 30 questions covering all sections of the course, a life cycle of one of the four major groups of terrestrial plants to be completed and described, and an open-ended question focusing more on one part of the course. This accounts for 70% of the overall grade.
The practical exam takes the form of a report based on the various parts of the practical work and the field trip. Forms to be completed will be given at the beginning of each practical work session and field trip, and will constitute the final report. This part accounts for 30% of the overall grade.
To pass the course, students must pass both the practical and theoretical exams. A minimum of 8/20 is required in each part for the final grade to be calculated. If one of the two grades is below 8, the student will be considered to have failed and the final grade will be the lower of the two grades.
