Translation from English into French of texts from lobbies, NGOs, associations and trade unions.
Brussels, the capital of the European Union and many other international institutions, is home to some 30,000 lobbyists working for more than 10,000 interest groups defending a wide range of interests, both private (finance, trade, GMOs, agriculture, energy, industry, tobacco, technology, pharmaceuticals, arms, chemicals, etc.) and public (health, environment, peace, development, refugees, human rights, education, alter-globalization, consumer rights, etc.), which are often contradictory.
Their activities generate an enormous volume of texts to be translated, as does international trade unionism in general and European trade unionism in particular.
Students will work mainly on persuasive, exhortative and propaganda texts.

At the end of this activity, the students will be able to translate a propaganda text, respecting not only the content in all its nuances, but also the internal rhetoric and the rhetoric specific to the lobby concerned, the colour, the mood...
They will have learnt to make the author's ideas their own so that they can communicate them with conviction, even if they do not personally share them.
They will have developed strategies for documentary research and the effective use of search engines.
They will have broadened their general knowledge of a range of political and social issues affecting Europe. They will also have increased their English and French vocabulary on these topics.
More generally, they will have improved their foreign language skills (reading comprehension, identifying textual and cognitive difficulties) and their mother tongue skills (summarising, reformulating, restructuring, adapting and condensing text). They will be able to translate technical content in the political field and produce a translation that is appropriate for its purpose. They will be better trained to check, reread and/or revise their own work and that of others in accordance with quality objectives. You will have developed your general knowledge and intellectual curiosity. They will have developed basic ethical skills: managing the various stages of a job, meeting deadlines and following instructions, working as part of a team, communicating with the client.

Lobbies and trade unions
The student will mainly carry out translations and revisions, including neural machine translation (DeepL and others). Particular attention will be paid to the preparation of the work, documentary research on the influential group and political issue concerned, and reflection on the issues raised.
Students will be required to do some preparatory work at home, consisting of actual translations and documentary research. Their work will be corrected/validated in turn by the teacher and their peers.

This teaching unit ("Unité d'enseignement," or UE) is subject to the principle of the "note absorbante," which means that the student having obtained a mark below 8/20 for one of the learning activities ("activités d'apprentissage," or AA) will receive a failing grade for the entire unit and will have to retake the failed AA in the second session regardless of the mathematical average of the two AA grades.

The test will consist of the translation of a persuasive, exhortative text from a lobby, NGO, association or trade union, the topic of which will be communicated one week in advance of approximately 400 words in 2 hours:
The target texts must not contain any major misunderstandings that would indicate a serious comprehension problem. Their language level will be adapted to the target audience. They should be idiomatic and substantially free of spelling, punctuation, grammatical and syntactical errors. Particular attention will be paid to dealing with textual or reformulation difficulties identified in class.
