Learning unit contents
Through the various disciplines presented in this module, will be met the main aspects concerning the embryonic development of the nephro-urinary system, the systematic and topographic anatomy, the neuro-anatomy and the histology of the kidney, the ureters, the bladder and the urethra, the physiology and the biochemistry of the kidney. All these elements concerning the normal man will be approached in a integrated way, by establishing - every time it is possible - the relation between the structure and the function.
Regarding the semiology, the clinical and biological signs related to renal disease and pathologicalphysiological aspects are analyzed during the course. A comparison between normal people and kidney disease patients will be made.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objectives are summarized by the following list, a complete and detailed list is supplied in the beginning of module with the vademecum. A list of general and specific objectives is available on the e-campus on line course :
- Know the anatomy of the kidney and the urinary tracts.
- Know the general architecture of the kidney, its vascularization, and acquire a three-dimensional spatial representation in the microscopic scale.
- Know components and histological structures of the nephron and establish the relation " structure - function".
- Know the embryological origin of loins, bladder and ureters.
- Know the characteristics of the blood renal debit and its regulation.
- Understand the organization of the nephron as functional entity.
- Understand the parameters which modulate the process of formation of the urine.
- Know the mechanisms of primary, secondary and tertiary active transport in the renal tubules.
- Know the physical characteristics, the normal and abnormal chemical components of the urine.
- Understand the mechanisms of concentration of the urine.
- Know the physiology of the ureter, the bladder and the urethra and the involved reflexes.
- Know and describe the diverse fluid compartments of the body and their composition, as well as the various systems buffers of the body.
- Describe the mode of regulation of the concentrations of the main present ions in the biological fluids.
- Know the regulating mechanisms allowing the homeostasis of the pH.
- Know the endocrine functions of the renal system.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Co and pre-requisites are detailed in the general Baccalaureate Medical formation (global course program).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This Module is multidisciplinar (based on different theoretical courses in different disciplines).
Practical works (MEDE0122 and MEDE0123) and Problem-based seminars (APPR0122) complete the practical and clinical aspects.
