Learning unit contents
This course is an introduction to quantum mechanics, a central theory for the understanding of physical processes on the microscopic scale.
Covered topics :
- fundamental ideas of quantum mechanics
- mathematical basis
- postulates, Schrödinger equation
- Heisenberg inequalities, Ehrenfest theorem
- harmonic oscillator
- angular momentum
- hydrogen atom
- spin
- quantum many-body systems and entanglement
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
After the completion of this course, the student will be able to :
- apprehend the internal machinery of quantum theory
- carry out predictive calculations on simple quantum systems
- illustrate fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics on actual examples
- identify situations for which the use of quantum mechanics is essential
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Notions of linear algebra and mathematical analysis (Fourier transform, function spaces, ...).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course consists of ex cathedra lectures supported by derivations on the blackboard. The teacher encourages interaction with students.
Podcasts of the lessons are provided to facilitate learning the material.

Further information:
A written exam is held in January and September. This exam, which lasts 3 hours, consists of open theory questions (50% of the points) and exercises to be solved (50% of the points). The theory questions may include reflective questions. A partial exemption valid from one session to the next (but not from one year to the next) may be obtained for the theory or exercises from 12/20.
