Learning unit contents

Introduction to contemporary philosophy of language based on the study of linguistic signification. Introduction to the basic notions and distinctions in the field (sens/reference, extension/intension, connotation/denotation, sigular terms/general terms, proper names/definite descriptions, literal meaning/non-literal meaning, ...), and also to the main thesis in 20th century philosophy (theory of definite descriptions, direct reference, theory of propositions, use theory of meaning, psychologism, verificationism, ...)

 

 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Understanding of some theoretical notions and models which lie at the ground of - or provide a critical standpoint towards - many linguistic theories.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Secondary education.
Some basic knowledge in linguitics is welcome.

The seminar will take place in Room Philo I (A1/2PHilI) on Fridays from 11am to 1pm during the first semester (September-December).
