Learning unit contents

Textual semiotics provides a method to analyse texts, literary or not, based upon linguistic premises.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

1. Initiation to methods and practices of internal analysis, particularly of literary texts.
2. Inititation to theoretical problems about linguistic textual analysis.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Competence in French language is essential for an appreciation of the complexities of French texts.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Phase 1. Readings (at home) of semiotic interpretations. Discussion (in class) on these readings.
Phase 2. Semiotic analysis of texts : exercises (home). Questions and answers (in class) about these exercises.
Phase 3. Preparatory work for the examination.

A personal essay (10 to 20 pages) to be handed in on the first day of the exam session on paper in my letterbox (opposite the lifts, 3rd floor, A2 building) AND to be sent in pdf format to my email address (semir.badir@uliege.be).

This paper will present an argumented interpretation of a French literary text based upon a semiotic analysis.
