Study of several topics concerning the interplay between Spanish language (and its varieties), the cultures and the societies linked to Spanish speakers and/or of Hispanic heritage.
This year's seminar topic: Spanish variation in the Spanish- and French-speaking world.
The course will address the following topics, among others:
- El español como lengua policéntrica. El concepto de norma
- Lengua, variación y cambio. Tipos de variación lingüística
- Los dialectos del español. Rasgos del español peninsular, canario y americano
- El español en contacto con el francés. Principales fenómenos
- Lengua e identidades. El español en contexto multicultural
- Migraciones hispánicas, repertorios y prácticas plurilingües
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
In-depth understanding of the phenomena of dialectal variation in Spanish, reflecting linguistic and socio-cultural specificities of the Spanish-speaking migrant population.
The development of the ability to analyze and identify these phenomena.
Linguistic skills in spoken Spanish equal to the C1 level of the CEFRL.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Level B2+ in Spanish.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Ex cathedra course, discussions based on readings.
Fieldwork: sociolinguistic survey.

Students who did not pass the May-June exam must take the exam under the same conditions during the August session.
Oral exam. Criteria:
- Phonological and grammatical correctness and consistency
- Clarity and organization of the presentation
- Use and understanding of the linguistic notions
- Extent of knowledge.
Individual written report (approx. 3-4 pages) in which the student must highlight the patterns of variation detected during a sociolinguistic interview. Evaluation criteria :
- Conceptual accuracy;
- Acuity/perspicacity of observations.
