Learning unit contents
This course is a synthetic and problem-oriented presentation of the main analytical tools that rhetoric and semiology can offer us. These two disciplines are focused on the operation of meaning in human discourse, verbal or nonverbal (we will concentrate on verbal discourse in this class, but the development of other systems of signification will be mentioned). We will describe different levels on which meaning is constructed, from the most basic unit, the sign, on up to more complex groupings, entire discourses delivered in particular interactive contexts, with a focus on the argumentative practices and the notion of "figure".
After a general introduction, the course will be organized into 7 main sections:
- sign(s) and semiosis
- grammar, code, text
- usage, context, variation
- discourse, genre, enunciation
- ethos and pathos
- arguments
- figures and interpretation
For each of these entries, we'll start with concrete corpora, which we'll analyze together, and use as a basis for presenting the different concepts linked to each entry.
The course is aimed at all students who wish to learn how to analyze and produce verbal and non-verbal discourse, and better understand the foundations of its social effectiveness.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
a) define the main concepts of rhetoric and semiotic analysis and understand the relations between them;
b) use these concepts to describe and analyse simple signs systems and discourses;
c) provide specific examples of general rhetoric or semiotic phenomena.
