Learning unit contents
The aim of the Immunopathology course is to introduce the student to the various ways in which the immune system may function abnormally, and which may be involved in the onset of disease.
The course chapters are as follows:
- General introduction to the diseases involving the immune system
- Primary immunodeficiencies
- Acquired immunodeficiencies
- Hypersensitivities
- General principles of autoimmunity and exemples of organ-specific vs. systemic autoimmune diseases
- Autoinflammatory syndromes
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This is an introductory course focusing on the basics and principles of the pathological states of immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity and autoinflammation. Biomedical science students are asked to focus on the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved, how these relate to the diseases discussed, the biological assays used to evaluate the diseases in question, and the therapeutic options or avenues available.
