Learning unit contents
Part 1: Dating methods applied to archaeology
A consequent introduction will reach dating in historical science. During this introduction, we will discuss the dating methods used in archaeology such as typo-chronologies (including permutation and seriation) and numismatics. We will then move on to thermoluminescence and archaeo-magnetism so that students can grasp their principles as well as the framework of their application. Dendrochronology, specialty of the University of Liege, will be the subject of theoretical sessions and practical applications in the laboratory.
Finally, we will look at case studies using several methods. A visit of a laboratory practicing isotopic dating methods will be organized.
To allow for both laboratory work and visits, the seminar will be organized in a three-day block and an additional half-day of revision will be organised.
