Learning unit contents
This course is divided into two parts.
The first one (20 h) is dedicated to information literacy. Bibliographic resources in Earth Sciences available at the University are presented. Among these : GEOREF, Scopus, GeoScienceWorld, the discovery tool of the University libraries... as well as certain specific internet resources. The correct writing of bibliographical references is also taught.
The topics hereafter are also dealt with : how to write and to organize a report, how to prepare an oral presentation.
The second part is dedicated to individual research work. The proposed subject is defined in close cooperation with the professors of Geology Bachelor and Master degrees. A list with the proposals is given to students.
Each student has to write a report presenting a literature review and the interpretation of the obtained results. An audio-visual presentation of his/her work in front of the class is organised.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Teaching students to develop information literacy skills on a specific topic.
- Learning about scientific research.
- Teaching students to write down a written report of their research findings, and to communicate their results orally.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Having a good background in Earth Sciences.

Initiation to research.
Conducting a research project (laboratory, fieldwork, data processing) in a Universitary laboratory.
Writing a bibliographic synthesis.
Writing a scientific report.
Oral communication of the completed project.

Additional information:
The first part of the course is held in a classroom of the University. For the rest of their project, students are invited to work autonomously. Access to all documentation resources within the University are guaranteed. The research work is done under the supervision of a scientist of the laboratory proposing the work.
The second part of the course will be a hybrid. What cannot be done remotely will be done in the lab.
