Learning unit contents

The immunology course (BAC3) is designed to provide fundamental training in immunology and the knowledge needed to understand the mechanisms that lead to immunopathologies. The course is structured around ex cathedra lectures as well as practical work in small groups.

Various concepts will be covered, including

History of immunology; non-specific immunity; antigenicity and immunogenicity; organs of the immune system; immunoglobulins; major histocompatibility complex molecules and the T receptor; regulation of the immune response; the humoral response; the cellular response; cytokines; immunotolerance; complement; phylogeny of the immune system; ontogeny of the immune system; immunity in the foetus and the newborn; immunology of ageing; specific and non-specific immune protection; local immunity; resistance to viruses, bacteria and parasites; transplantation immunology; resistance to tumours; hypersensitivity reactions; stress and the immune response; innate immune memory, monoclonal antibodies; assessment of humoral and cellular immunity; immunodiagnostic methodology; vaccines and vaccination; passive immunity.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practical work is organised in the form of ppt presentations, active discussions and exercises. 8 hours per series of students. During practical work, students are required to observe basic rules of respect. A test will take place at the end of the practical work.
